Jesus Begins His Ministry

Tagged Under :

This weekend’s Bible lesson was from the Book of Luke. After Jesus was baptized and had conquered His temptations to seek worldly power, He was ready to begin the ministry for which God had sent Him. Word about Jesus and His teachings began to spread as Jesus taught in synagogues surrounding Galilee.

This weekend we made sure that the kids understood that Jesus had a job to do. The children were also taught what it means to be called to work with Jesus to accomplish God’s work. They were taught that regardless of one’s occupation, age, or social standing, we can serve God in everything we do.

As teachers and parents, we can be encouragers to the children. We can help them follow their dreams and find the paths to which God calls them. As their future unfolds, we in the church can support them so that whatever path they choose, they will serve God.

Jesus’ Baptism

Over and over again, throughout his life, Jesus set examples for others to follow.Through this weekend’s bible account, the children discovered that Jesus set the example of baptism. Though he himself did not need repentance or forgiveness, he chose to be baptized. Through his baptism, Jesus set an example of humility and obedience, and he identified himself with God’s love and purpose for the world.

This weekend, the children heard the story of Jesus’ baptism. They discovered that God loved Jesus and was pleased with him. This week help your children to understand that baptism both Jesus’ baptism and our own is a symbol that reminds us that we belong to God’s family and that God loves us. Encourage your children to follow the examples set by Jesus so that they too can act in ways that are pleasing to God.

Jesus in the Temple at Twelve

Tagged Under :

From the visit of the wise men that we talked about last week until the time Jesus was a grown man, the Bible tells us very little about His life. In fact, except for one account about a trip when He was twelve to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover with his parents, the Bible is silent. For the most part we are left to wonder what Jesus was like during the days of His childhood and youth. We wonder what games he played, what His favorite story was, and what was He like as a teenager.

What we do learn from this account about His trip to Jerusalem is important. We learned from the account that as the family was returning home they realized that Jesus was not among their group. Frantically they returned to the city to search for Jesus. Finally they found Him in the Temple sitting among the teachers, asking and answering questions.

As a parent imagine the emotions Mary and Joseph must have felt when they saw Jesus in the Temple. They must have felt anger, elation, relief, joy, and confusion. And what about the Temple leaders? The Bible tells us that they were amazed at both Jesus’ questions and His answers. Surely few adults, and even less children, had such an understanding of the Scriptures. For Jesus, though, His purpose was clear: “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” He asked.

Jesus returned home with His parents and was obedient to them from that time forth. That is all we know of the specific events of Jesus’ childhood. However, the Bible tells us that He continued to grow into a man, and He grew in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with both God and His fellow humans.

You as a parent may be asking, how do we as a church help your child to grow as Jesus grew, to become men and women like Him? Well for one, we here at CCk are committed to keeping them involved in the church. Jesus wanted to be in God’s house. It was not a chore or a burden to “go to church”. We here at CCk are committed to make your child’s church experience something that they will enjoy and not soon forget. We are committed to make CCk a place of joy where your children feel welcomed, safe, and included. We take it very serious that we are an integral part in your child’s spiritual development. We have a responsibility to support you as their parents as you strive to foster your child’s spirituality.

Helping children grow as Jesus grew is the opportunity of a lifetime. Enjoy it!!!

The Wise Men

Tagged Under :

This Weekend we taught the kids the account of the wise men and how through their journey and the star they followed, God revealed Jesus as His Son. In this account, God made it clear from the beginning of Jesus’ life that the good news about Jesus was not just for the Jews but for all the people around the world, including those, like the wise men who came from different cultures and faiths. This account also demonstrates how God used creation to proclaim that His Son was born. Through the planets and stars, the wise men a world away could see that a great event had occurred and that a new and powerful king had been born. Imagine how powerful the sign must have been to compel the wise men from the Eastern part of the world to travel months and perhaps even years across desserts and rough terrain in search of a young king. Clearly something bigger than curiosity compelled them to make such a trip, to bring gifts, and to worship a king from a culture other than their own.

While none of the gifts the wise men brought seem appropriate for our modern understanding of gift-giving, they were very appropriate for Jesus, the King of kings, the Son of God and our Savior. Gold was a symbol of the wealth and power of royalty, a perfect gift for a king. Frankincense, as a spice used in worship and offerings, was a gift for a priest. Myrrh, as the spice used to treat wounds and prepare bodies for burial, was a fitting gift for one who was expected to face suffering and death in order to save us.

Through this account we taught the kids that everybody no matter how young, have treasures to offer Jesus. This week as you interact with your kids remind them of this fact.
